First Civic Exchange Event in Vodice, Croatia
Activating Citizens
In June 2026, the town of Vodice hosted the first Civic Exchange Event of NEBVOICES, marking the official start of the project and the beginning of a shared journey connecting citizens and communities from Croatia, Italy, Slovenia and Portugal.
The event introduced participants to European democratic values and the principles of the New European Bauhaus — sustainability, inclusion and beauty — and explored how these values can be applied in everyday community life. Rather than a traditional conference, the programme combined learning, dialogue and direct experience through a Walking Café, reflection and discussion sessions, and participatory activities focused on local spaces and citizens’ perspectives.
Citizens, local authorities and civil society representatives exchanged experiences, discussed local challenges and explored how communities can become more actively involved in shaping decisions that affect them. The Vodice event set the participatory foundation for the following NEBVOICES activities in other partner communities.
Two important project tools were also initiated in Vodice: the Virtual Civic Exchange Platform, designed as a shared space for learning and exchange, and the Cooperation Charter, strengthening cooperation between project partners, citizens and civil society organisations.

The town is renowned for the rich and diverse cultural and entertainment programme of the Vodice Summer Festival, while its tourism achievements and the quality of its offer have earned numerous awards and recognitions from both tourism professionals and visitors.
The Day of the Town of Vodice and the Parish of the Finding of the Holy Cross is celebrated on 3 May, the feast day of the town’s patron saint, Saint Jelina. Special devotion is also paid to Our Lady of Mount Carmel on 16 July, whose sanctuary was built on the nearby hill of Okit.
